ARKS

What is ARKS
ARKS (Association of Racing Kart Schools ) is a test which you need to take before you apply to the MSA for a race licence. It is a short test in two parts which includes a kart driving test and multiple choice question sheet. As an example you will watch a Video and be asked questions on safety, regulations, the flags and signals etc and will need to show the authorised examiner that you can complete several full laps of the race circuit within a reasonable amount of time whilst having a safe and sensible control of the kart and your own actions. ARKS schools are available throughout the UK for race training and instruction. Dunkeswell Kart Club is one of the many UK clubs which have fully trained examiners authorised by ARKS to test

How old do I have to be to take the test
The minimum age is 8 years.

Who has to take the test
Anyone who wishes to race at MSA licenced events or at national championships such as those run by ABkC, MSA or NKRA for example.

Do I need an ARKS test to practice at race circuits
At Dunkeswell we allow anyone who owns a kart to practice on a Saturday but if you do not have an ARKS test pass you will not be allowed to practice on a race Saturday before a Race day. A few clubs and venues have different rules in that they will only allow licenced drivers to use their circuit so it is best to find out the venue rules before setting off for practice.

How do I book an ARKS test
First you will need to purchase the 'Start Karting' pack available throughout the year from the MSA (Motor Sports Association) An ARKS school or Lodgemark Press ( Karting Magazine). Read the information thoroughly. You will also get a Video and everything needed to help you complete the test and apply for a licence. You can book an ARKS test at Dunkeswell by calling Ian Batstone on the number below.

You can also book a test through the ARKS Association and other Clubs.
ARKS Web Site | www.arks.co.uk

How much does the test cost
The test costs £85 (plus VAT). If you are over 18 you will also need to have a medical so you will need to pay your doctor. Under 18s do not need a medical unless they need to be declared fit due to an injury or illness. You will find more information on this in your ARKS pack.

Do I need my own Kart
You do not need to use your own kart on an ARKS test. At Dunkeswell we have no Karts available for hire at present so you will use your own, hire one from a local trader or arrange to borrow one from a friend. Some circuits will let you hire a kart for your test. You will need to practice your driving skills before your ARKS test if you are a complete novice so give yourself a few weeks to improve your driving. You will also need a race suit, helmet, boots and gloves for your safety.

I have booked my test and passed
Send your licence application form to the MSA don't forget to include a passport size photograph, your medical certificate (if applicable) and proof of your ARKS pass. The MSA will then send you a Kart national B licence which entitles you to compete in any club event. (You can upgrade in the future to a national A licence). When you receive your licence you will also get the MSA 'Blue book' and the MSA 'Gold book'. These books contain MSA rules and regulations and class regulations. Most classes are listed in the 'Gold book'.

How long will I be racing as a Novice
All drivers no matter how good their skills will compete on novice number plates at the beginning of their race career. You will race as a novice until you have completed 6 events and gained 6 signatures for your licence. Take note that your ARKS Pass signature may count as 1 event and at least 1 event must be completed on another circuit. Also If you do well in your novice events you may get your first trophy.

What now
When you have completed your novice events you will come off your novice plates. Now the fun really starts as you will be racing to beat the experts and not just the other novices in front - or if you're fast enough, behind you. Race at a few more circuits and you can upgrade your competition licence and take on some of the top competition in the UK and Europe.
